When the pandemic hit the world, I had a small shared photo studio with some friends. I was regularly shooting in a controlled setting, with lights and props, studio portraiture mostly. Covid and its safety issues had us shut down the studio almost immediately.
In 2021, after a hiatus from almost any photography, I decided it was time to pick up my Film Camera again. I shoot interesting moments, people, architecture and design inspirations I see walking around the city on my iphone all the time, But holding this 35mm camera again gave me a renewed perspective on documenting my life. Slower, more deliberate. The content was very similar, just things I would notice, nice light, But trying to be a little more serious with making a strong image than just documenting something. The iphone photography functions almost like sketchbook or a notepad, jotting down ideas and reference. And shooting on a full frame digitally, I always tried to get things as close to what I wanted straight out of the camera with miinimal editing, but ust knowing that you can go back and edit, adjust exposure, retouch, makes it all feel so much more plastic. Its back and forth, massaging the image to get exactly what you want.
With film, its shot, its put away and then a surprise when you get things back from being developed.
It’s been fun to be back shooting in this way.
